What is a doula?
A Doula is a person who lovingly guides others during their lives’ greatest transitions
More specifically, a Birth Doula provides emotional, physical, and spiritual support during pregnancy, birth, early postpartum, and/or loss
services
As a birth doula, I tailor each prenatal visit to the specific needs of the mother or birthing person. I provide on-site care through labor and delivery in hospital, birthing center, and homebirth settings located in New York and California* and I offer one postpartum follow-up visit.
Prenatal visits
A prenatal visit is a time for the mother or birthing person and I to get acquainted. We will chat about any pertinent medical information, birth preferences, postpartum plans and preparations, etc. We’ll also get in tune with one another. How are you feeling? Are you receiving the support that you need? Do you have any fears or concerns that we can work through? These visits will be our time to build trust and rapport so that I can best provide the best service and comfort to you during labor and delivery.
Labor and delivery
The excitement builds as your contractions —or, as some call them, “rushes”—begin… Call and update me as your labor progresses, and I will come assist you throughout active labor, delivery, and the birth of your baby! During this time, we will be exercising relaxation and pain coping techniques and changing positions. During labor, think of me as your beacon of calm, nurturing, respect, and encouragement. I am not there to coach you or bark out commands; I am there to quietly offer reassurance and suggestions that will help facilitate this beautiful process of bringing your baby earthside. I am there to support you in every way that you need it.
postpartum
Think of this courtesy postpartum visit as a symbolic closing ceremony after the deeply profound experience that we have just shared. During this visit, we will chat about how you are transitioning to life as a new mommy, and see if you’ll require any additional resources. We can recount stories from the birth; I can help you tidy up; you can take a shower while I play with your little one :) This is a relaxing wind-down from your baby’s birth.
